Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Sets New Record For Concurrent Players

Since the announcement of Counter-Strike 2, CS:GO is getting more attention than ever before.

There are few multiplayer titles in the market whose player base has reached tremendous amounts. Dota 2, League of Legends, and Apex Legends are a few of these games, and it would actually be a crime not to have Counter-Strike on that list. A few months ago, Valve released a trailer for their upcoming project of theirs called Counter-Strike 2, which aims to port CS:GO to their new game engine: Source 2. With that, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will be tidier, easier to look at, and more stable than CS:GO in terms of performance. In a way, they have pulled a move that was pretty similar to what Blizzard Entertainment did with Overwatch 2.

Since the release of the trailers of CS2 in March of this year, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s concurrent players have been rising. In two months, CS:GO’s player count has increased from 1.5 million to 1.8 million. There are a few reasons for why it happened, of course, one of them being the fact that CS2 is coming later this year, and its regular player base is riding the hype train. The other not-so-blatant reason is there is an upcoming major tournament, backed by Valve themselves. In usual Valve fashion, they will be releasing an update to commemorate the major, and the update will include new items such as stickers, weapons and gloves. Unfortunately, this leads to some people exploiting the system.

It is believed that the other reason for the spike in players is people setting up bots to drop loot by idling in the game and selling the boxes for profit or having a chance to open multiple boxes at once to get rare items. It usually happens before the major tournaments. This time it is going to be more impactful by the looks of it.

CS2 is still in the beta phase, and only a limited number of players are able to test it. On the other hand, The Paris Major is going to be the last tournament to use CS:GO. The next tournament, which will happen in two years, will use the updated CS2. The Paris Major will run from the 8th of May to 21st.
