EA is notorious for buying studios then closing them when they don't perform to their expectations. Visceral Games, which created the acclaimed Dead Space franchise was one of those unfortunate victims. Not only did it mean that Dead Space would remain unfinished but EA also canceled their Star Wars title called Ragtag. But it also seems that EA has another game in development with Visceral and Criterion. An open-world Star Wars Battlefront spinoff.

According to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, several EA employees who are familiar with the Electronic Art's inner workings spoke about a project called Viking. An open-world spinoff title of the Star Wars Battlefront series that began development in 2015. The game was going to be developed with Visceral Games, and Criterion would take on the project as its lead developer. Unfortunately, the project's major issue was communication. As the Visceral was in San Francisco and Criterion was in England.

According to the sources, the project was too ambitious and used the term "Too Many Cooks" to better describe it. The project was canceled in 2019 as it wouldn't be able to meet EA's deadline of 1 year and 6 months. And EA wouldn't provide any extensions.

Since then Criterion has taken on the role as head of the Need for Speed franchise. Visceral has closed. EA's latest Star Wars game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, developed by Respawn Entertainment was a massive hit. Providing an extensive single-player campaign free from microtransactions and challenging lightsaber combat.
