EA Blacklist YouTuber Over Sponsored YouTube Anthem Review

YouTuber blacklisted by EA for negative Anthem review

By Grayshadow, Posted 23 Feb 2019

Getting blacklisted isn't a good thing, but sometimes it happens. For YouTuber Gggmanlives, he was granted a review copy of Anthem and sponsorship by EA, but his views on the game were negative. EggmanLives pointed out technical issues, sound problems, and other gameplay concerns with valid evidence to back them up. However, EA wasn't keen on his views and decided to not only force the YouTuber to remove the video but blacklist him entirely.

Anthem,NoobFeed,

I finally managed to get my #AnthemGame video done and sadly I don't have many positive things to say about it. I hope they can fix game this over time by listening to player feedback, but right now it's a hard sell. And it's a damn shame. https://t.co/GDGWKTIpZY

I'm blacklisted by EA now and had to delete it.

Updated video here if people are interested. It's the same video, just without the disclaimer at the start.https://t.co/g5h6yBzaqp

For those unaware, blacklisting, in this case, is when a company will permanently deny all future requests for early access review copies for products published by EA. This can extend to press and special events as well.

The bewildering part is that GggmanLives was part of EA's Game Changers program, a community partnership program that prides themselves on honestly. The community manager of the program, Lee Williams, has stated that GggmanLives has not been blacklisted but the video was taken down because of "conditions on disclosure sponsored weren't met".

In a conversation in private on Twitter conducted by Deputy Editor at VG247 Kirk McKeand reached out personally to Gggmanlives for some further information:

“I basically wasn’t allowed to say anything negative about the game if I also had the watermark in because the watermark means EA endorses it and shares it through the Game Changers network or something. I really don’t know what it all means. I was just told it was to be pulled down and was basically a breach of contract or something along those lines.”

The video review has been uploaded again but without the EA watermark, which is required for all sponsored content.

In a time where more and more gamers are becoming untrustful of big publishers, this is a huge blow to EA. The company already has an infamous reputation among gamers for putting monetization and loot boxes above making quality games. This will only add fuel to the fire as more people will not be less likely to trust EA's sponsored content as well. Especially since Anthem's live service model requires a constant player base.

Anthem is now available for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
