Rumor: Microsoft Has Almost Finalized A Deal To Buy Obsidian Entertainment

The studio behind Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars Of Eternity may end up under Microsoft's umbrella.

Microsoft might be very close to buying independent developer Obsidian Entertainment. Kotaku reports that people close to the parties involved have said as much, one of them calling the deal "90%" completed. Another person was quoted as saying: "It’s a matter of when, not if.". Spokespersons from both parties have refused to comment when the outlet reached out. While this remains a rumor until an official statement emerges, Obsidian wouldn't be the first studio Microsoft set out to buy this year. Earlier in June, State Of Decay developer Undead Labs, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice developer Ninja Theory and Forza series developer Playground Games were all bought by the company.

Obsidian Entertainment's most famous titles include Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas. More recently, they've been a significant force behind the cRPG revival currently going on, releasing titles such as Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. It will be interesting to see if the deal goes through and how that affects the studio in the future. Having Microsoft behind it would bring more stability but at the cost of losing independence.
