Why Star Wars Battlefront 2 Removed Cosmetics from Loot Boxes

Why we didn't get a Pink Darth Vader?

The loot box controversy regarding Star Wars Battlefront 2 has been a heated topic discussed by everyone ranging from the video game industry to governments around the world. The system, linked directly to progression, would randomly give players an advantage based on what they obtained from loot boxes instead of gaining levels. This luck-based system would encourage players to purchase more loot boxes to gain an advantage over other players, a concept included in free-to-play games but never implemented to such as a degree in a premium title.

Other games, such as Overwatch, have provided loot boxes but solely provide cosmetic options to ensure a fair and even playing field. At one point Battlefront 2 was to use a similar feature but was removed according to EA's Chief Financial Officer.

“The one thing we’re very focused on and they are extremely focused on is not violating the canon of Star Wars,” commented Blake Jorgenson. “It’s an amazing brand that’s been built over many, many years, and so if you did a bunch of cosmetic things, you might start to violate the canon, right? Darth Vader in white probably doesn’t make sense, versus in black. Not to mention you probably don’t want Darth Vader in pink. No offense to pink, but I don’t think that’s right in the canon.”

As you might expect the comment hasn't gone over well with the Star Wars community. Many taking aims at the "canon" comment correctly stating obvious holes in Star Wars Battlefront 2, which allows you to play out fights where Darth Vader and Kylo Ren team up to battle Yoda and Rey.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is now available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
