Earthlock: Festival of Magic Gets Big Performance Update And Sale

There's never been a better time to try the Final Fantasy-inspired Earthlock: Festival of Magic.

Sometimes when games struggle, it’s a little disheartening to witness. Earthlock: Festival of Magic seems like one of those games that has a lot of attention poured into it, but can’t seem to get off the ground. A new patch, released on Steam, aims to kick the roleplaying game (RPG) up a notch, once again.

In particular, this Earthlock update should optimize the brightly-colored game. Shiny bloom effects were improved, vegetation added, while some effects have been toned down, to improve framerate performance. For instance, the depth of field effects, which blur background elements, were removed from combat arenas.

Weirdly enough, the patch also addressed the quirks of having to deal with a ratings board. It’s a rare form of transparency that we don’t often get to see, when it comes to applying to something like the European Software Ratings Board (ESRB). In order to pass its bar for age 12, already fairly high for a cutesy fantasy RPG, Earthlock had to adjust the following two arbitrary items:

- Reference to alcohol in Gnart’s journal has been removed
- Red VFX in gorge attack changed to avoid “Animated Blood rating”

Earthlock: Festival of Magic was in development for what seems like ages. The RPG is mostly aimed at fans of older Final Fantasy releases and that era of games. Since 2013, it took developer Snowcastle Games two tries on Kickstarter to get funded, failing a goal of $250,000 and then achieving a more modest $150,000 target. Console releases for Xbox One and Playstation 4 followed, but the promised Wii U version is still going through quality assurance. In a recent update, the developer noted that the Wii U version is still coming, but a Nintendo Switch version could perhaps happen as well. In that case, backers who chose that option would get both Nintendo versions.

To date, Earthlock: Festival of Magic has only managed to attach to 13,000 buyers, according to Steamspy. That, for the magnitude of development, does not seem like a lot. Along with the performance update, the RPG is currently also heavily discounted on Steam. Until May 21, it’s possible to grab Earthlock: Festival of Magic at 67% off.

Perhaps now is the time to dive into a new fantastical world. Let us know if you’ve played Earthlock: Festival of Magic in the comments.
