Square Enix is adding more fan flare to Final Fantasy VII Remake, allowing players to control other characters within the game.
Final Fantasy VII Remake will be taking the action RPG route and allow character swapping within combat, unlike Final Fantasy XV, based on the description given on the game's combat encounter. Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 director, Tetsuya Nomura, stated in an interview:
“Rather than just ending it at that scaffold, we’ve made wide use of the space and developed a battle that takes advantage of the map’s characteristics where you’ll fight while switching between Cloud and Barret. For example, when there’s an enemy in a position that can’t be reached by Cloud’s sword, it’s more effective to switch to Barret. It’s becoming strategic in that way, as well. The Guard Scorpion will change modes in the middle of the battle and demonstrate behavior not in the original version. Also in this screenshot, it should be noted that missiles and such are coming down. It’s become a significantly flashy battle.”
Players were able to combat other characters in the original game when Cloud was made unavailable but this is a massive shift. Personally, I would love to control a certain one-winged angel during a specific flashback scene.
Final Fantasy VII is currently in development for PS4 and will release episodically.
