Fallout 3, the game that would cause an entire gaming generation to demand a sequel asap, could have been a very different game. According to CEO of Obsidian Entertainment, Fergus Urquhart, when taking IGN 2 canceled versions would've changed the final product entirely.
The team behind Fallout: New Vegas revealed that, when it was called Black Isle Studios, worked on 2 canceled Fallout 4 projects from the time between 1998, the release of Fallout 2, and the release of Fallout 3. One of the canceled projects was called "Van Buren" while the other wasn't named and went on to become Icewind Dale.
Urquhart noted that these games were in 2D but the studio wanted to bring Fallout into the 3D world. Urquhart also added that the games were on schedule but due to financial issues with their publisher, Interplay, this lead to the cancellation of one of the Fallout games that would become Icewind Dale.
Fallout 4 is now available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Fallout 3 is now available on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Fallout 3 is backwards compatible on Xbox One.
