GDC Awards and Tribute to Satoru Iwata

Who took home GDC 2016 awards this time around?

Many notable games were nominated for this year’s GDC awards, and while only one can be chosen to take away the award each one of these treasures are worth playing.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was selected at this year’s Game of the Year for GDC 2016 and Best Technology. It was also Noobfeed’s Game of the Year for 2015.

Best Design
Rocket League – Psyonix

Best Handheld/Mobile Game
Her Story – Sam Barlow

Best Visual Art
Ori and the Blind Forest – Moon Studios

Best Narrative
Her Story – Sam Barlow

Best Audio
Crypt of the NecroDancer – Brace Yourself Games

Best Technology
The Witcher 3 – CD Projekt RED

Innovation Award
Her Story – Sam Barlow

Best Debut
Moon Studios (Ori and the Blind Forest)

Game of the Year
The Witcher 3 – CD Projekt RED

In addition Bethesda’s Todd Howard was given the lifetime achievement award and Markus “Notch” Persson, creator of Minecraft, took home the pioneer award.

The highlight of the entire presentation was a video tribute to the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. The video highlights the creative developer’s many accomplishments and most importantly his innovations to the gaming industry.
