Atari Announces Fitness App

Atari Fit will invite players to exercise by awarding them with classic Atari games

Today, the iconic video game company, Atari, announced its most recent project, Atari Fit. Following the same path Nintendo created, Atari teams up with 8BitFit and Gametheory in order to create an app that focuses in exercise, health and quality of live of its users.

Atari Fit, developed alongside renowned personal trainer Michael Porter, certified personal trainer and performance enhancement specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), will provide its user with more than 150 different exercises including full-body circuit workouts, running programs and custom routines. The innovative part is the reward system it will feature. As a form of giving incentives to its users, the app will unlock classic Atari games, such as Centipede, Pong and Super Breakout every time the user achieves a goal, completes a challenge or reaches certain milestones withing the app. This will, for sure, be attractive to more than one retro gaming fanatic and provides alluring incentives to exercise.

The second rewar system comes via a partnership with Walgreens and the integration to the Walgreens Balance Rewards Program. this way, Atari Fit will allow users to earn points in the Walgreens Balance Rewards Program.

Atari Fit will also feature a number of social functions and interactions, as well as compatibility with propular fitness gear such as the Fitbit and the RunKeeper, and integrated data from applications such as Google Health, in order to achieve better and more accurate results during workout.

Atari Fit is the first fitness app to motivate and reward players with gameplay for being active in between gaming sessions. It’s a gamified fitness experience with an Atari twist. Players are motivated to work toward their fitness goals, while offering a fun, competitive experience where they earn coins and can unlock their favorite classic Atari games. The team and leaderboard components are especially unique to the Atari Fitexperience, as players around the globe can exercise, play and get healthy together.”

Some of the features included in the app will be the gamified workouts, which will make users feel like they are playing a game and trying to become the fittest person on Earth, due to its leaderboard capabilities; multiplayer, which allows users to workout alongside other users and friends located anywhere in the world; online leaderboards for the classic Atari games unlocked, and social sharing, so user can share their experiences and workouts with friends and the online community.

there is no specified release date for the app, but it was announced for mobile devices during early 2015". It is also unclear which mobile devices will be compatible with Atari Fit.
