Crowdfunds are a great way to bring a game to life, it brings the community together and allows developers to give their backers special rewards, just to say thanks for their support. While many backers are excited to receive these tiered rewards, some are left rather underwhelmed, such was the case with one Psychonauts 2 Fig backer who recently received their physical copy of the game and is rather disappointed with what they received.
As mentioned earlier, crowdfunding is an excellent way to fund a game, and there have been many success stories such as Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, Shovel Knight, Divinity: Original Sin 2, even the sleeper hit, Baldur's Gate 3. Psychonauts hosted their crowdfunding campaign on the now defunct Fig platform, where the game was able to raise around $3.3 million, soon after Double Fine, the studio behind the game, was acquired by Microsoft. Backers were expected to receive different types of rewards, artbooks, plushies and of course, physical versions of Psychonauts 2. However, the $100 backers of the game have finally gotten their rewards and are feeling a little snubbed.
One such backer was Reddit user, Thesaxmaniac, who recently shared a photo of their "physical copy" of Psychonauts 2 and also their grievances surrounding it. According to Thesaxmaniac, they were a Psi-cadet, the name given to backers who backed the $100 tier of the game's crowdfund. They had requested a physical edition of Psychonauts 2 for PC and Mac, and instead of receiving a physical boxed case as you would expect, they instead received a steel tin that contained a USB, that came with a Psychonauts 2 themed keychain. This is very obviously not what Thesaxmaniac and many of the other $100 backers were expecting, as many were hoping to get a boxed version with a disc, similar to how the first game was packaged for PC.
Understandably, receiving a USB drive over a box is rather disappointing, it seems that maybe that was the wrong tier to back as backers who backed the Collector’s Edition received an actual box and more. This error is admitted by Thesaxmaniac, but at least they received a copy of the game, though only in USB form. Psychonauts 2 had over 24 000 backers, with many of them still waiting to receive their rewards. Due to Fig being defunct, it's unclear how and when the other backers will receive their rewards.
