In a surprise announcement, PlayStation President and CEO Jim Ryan announced today that he is stepping down from his role. This comes as a shock as PlayStation 5 is selling like hotcakes under his leadership. There are a lot of mixed opinions about Jim Ryan, depending on who you ask. Love him or hate him, there is no denying the strength of the PlayStation brand under his direction. Jim took over as CEO during a particularly strong period for PlayStation. Under the leadership of previous CEO Shawn Layden, the PlayStation 4 absolutely crushed its competitor, the Xbox One, by a wide margin.

Under Jim Ryan, PlayStation did successfully launch the PlayStation 5 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain issues. As of this time of writing, the PlayStation 5 has sold 40 million units. Jim Ryan’s formal reason for leaving was made in a statement on Wednesday. Jim finds it difficult to continue working in North America while residing in Europe, thus ending his tenure with PlayStation after twenty-eight years. Jim Ryan will officially retire from his role as CEO in the Spring of 2024. It is up to the future leadership of PlayStation to keep up the momentum.

A new successor has not been named as of this time. For now, Hiroki Totoki, who serves as COO and CFO of Sony Group Corporation, will step up to the plate until Jim Ryan’s successor has been chosen. Hiroki Totoki has been with Sony since April 1987, working his way up to various different roles, including CEO and CFO of Sony Network Communications Inc. With his impressive resume, it seems PlayStation is in good hands until a new CEO has been chosen. Best wishes to Jim Ryan and all his future endeavors, and we hope he can enjoy retirement. For now, we will have to wait and see for the future of leadership at PlayStation.
