Google is the latest company to enact large-scale layoffs, and it appears to be following a trend in tech companies to get rid of large quantities of its staff over a short period of time. This time around, the number of people laid off amounts to 12,000 people. An absolutely staggering number of people, and it equals to about 6% of the total workforce.
This news was announced by Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, in a blog post. The blog post itself discusses some of the reasons for this decision. The majority of the blame is aimed squarely at the changing economic situation in the world. He claims that over the last two years, many people were hired based on a period of intense growth. That period has since passed. So, many employees need to go as a result. This also comes a few days after Google Stadia went offline.
The blog post also states that in the United States, all employees that are let go will receive a 60 day notification period, there will be a severance package, bonus pay will be in effect, and various benefits will be maintained for six months. It also states that other countries will be dealt with according to local laws.
This does not entirely coincide with what some employees have suggested. For instance, one employee, who was with the company for 16 and a half years, wrote on his LinkedIn account about his experience. He was let go at 3am, learned about it because he could no longer access company services, and he has not received word on why he was laid off.
None of this bodes particularly well, but it is part of a larger trend. The recent news that Microsoft laid off 10,000 people and that Riot Games laid off 46 people are just the latest in this list of tech companies that are now getting rid of people. We can only hope that the tens of thousands of people who have been let go manage to find work elsewhere.
