It is official, there will be a Death Stranding film adaptation to go along with all the other recent video game adaptations that have been announced over the last few months. Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions, the studio that made Death Stranding, has partnered with Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios, the company that co-produced the 2022 horror film Barbarian, to produce this adaptation of the 2019 game.
This news was reported in an exclusive report by Deadline, and it was revealed that this adaptation will add new characters and elements to the world of Death Stranding. However, there are no real details about what exactly we should expect as details are being kept secret for now, but this will also mark Hideo Kojima’s first foray into the world of film after spending several decades in the games industry. It also comes hot off the heels of the announcement of Death Stranding 2 at the 2022 Game Awards.
In the report, Kojima stated: “I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios. This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing DEATH STRANDING to the big screen.”
Whereas Lebovici gave a little more information by stating: “Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo Kojima’ production.”
These are some rather big claims, and they do also come amidst the many recent game adaptation announcements, such as the upcoming adaptations of Fallout, God of War, and even ToeJam and Earl. The age of the video game adaptation appears to be upon us! Let’s hope they can do these games justice.
