The Witcher Remake Is Confirmed As Open-World

The Witcher Remake has officially been confirmed as an open-world game, which should end the speculation about how the 2007 game will be adapted.

The Witcher Remake has officially been described, by CD Projekt RED, as an open-world game. This should stop any further speculation about how the developers will handle the fact that the first two Witcher games are not actually open-world games, but rather open-ended, level-based games that were tangential to open-world but were not technically open-world.

This has been officially confirmed in a third-quarter earnings report by CD Projekt RED. On page 5 of the report, it states that The Witcher Remake is going to be a “story-driven single player open-world RPG – a modern reimaging of 2007’s The Witcher.”

If you wanted to have some more information, there is none. The page is a single image with the game’s logo, that small quote, and the codename. Interestingly, they codenamed the game “Canis Majoris,” which translates as “Dog Major.” It may have been more accurate to codename a game about Geralt, the White Wolf, “Canis Lupus,” as in “Wolf,” but this works well enough too.

The idea of this also being a “reimaging” of the 2007 original indicates that there will likely be a few changes aside from the purely graphical. The original game has not aged very well, and it wasn’t particularly pretty when it came out either, but if CD Projekt RED introduces some Witcher 3 gameplay elements and sensibilities, such as a streamlined control system, then this should be an interesting addition to the Witcher universe.

Hopefully this new version matches the hype and payoff around The Witcher 3 rather than the lack of a payoff many felt when they first played Cyberpunk 2077. It should be very interesting to see how they translate this very PC-heavy game to a modern audience.
