RGG Studio Retire The Yakuza Name

Hit Japanese action franchise Yakuza will now be known as Like a Dragon.

The Ryu Ga Gotoku franchise began in Japan in 2005 and told the story of a Japanese gangster released from prison after serving a decade-long sentence for a crime he did not commit. One year later, the game shipped worldwide with new name Yakuza. The franchise has received eight mainline titles and spawned numerous spin-offs and rereleases in the years since; most recently 2020's Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Ryu Ga Gotoku roughly translates to 'Like a Dragon' in English and publisher SEGA and developer RGG Studio have chosen to adopt this title for all future releases in the franchise. In hindsight, Yakuza: Like a Dragon could be seen as a stepping stone between the Japanese and English titles.

In a recent roundtable interview, the head of RGG Studio, Masayoshi Yokoyama explained that the positive reception to Yakuza: Like a Dragon (which also featured a new combat system and protagonist) made the studio confident that the franchise could continue despite the name change. For their upcoming remake of the Samurai spin-off game Like a Dragon: Ishin!, the decision was easier. While the game, which was announced at Sony Entertainment's State of Play show in September, will still feature Japan's criminal underworld, the story does not focus on the Yakuza.

Two more titles have been announced, and neither will be called YakuzaLike a Dragon 8 is scheduled to release in 2024 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC and will feature both franchise mainstay Kazuma Kiryu and Yakuza: Like a Dragon protagonist Ichiban Kasuga, as well as the latter game's turn-based combat. Before then, however, Kiryu will star in his own spin-off title, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name in 2023.
