The Yakuza franchise is a beloved and long-running series. As someone who just recently played all the major installments, I personally can see why with Yakuza: Like A Dragon being my favorite game in the series. Now the series is getting a direct sequel but it wasn't all good news.
Today Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi left RGG Studio and SEGA along with Daisuke Sato.
The confirmation of the sequel was revealed by The Tojo Dojo:
New Studio lead Masayoshi Yokoyama had this to say:
Ryu Ga Gotoku’s predecessors have passed down their beliefs and know-how to each and every staff member. You can witness it in the recently released Lost Judgment and will see it in the upcoming sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon which will continue Ichiban Kasuga’s story.
This game is currently being developed by producer Sakamoto and directors Horii, Ito and Mitake. I myself along with Takeuchi and Furuta are working on the story.
Whether it’s six months or one year from now, I hope to show you a new Ryu Ga Gotoku title by a new Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio that is different but still the same, and something that will spark a feeling of “this is what we are waiting for” within you. I’d like to continue on my life as a video game creator with earnestness.
This is a massive turn-around considering Lost Judgment just released and now a new game in the mainline Yakuza franchise has been revealed. No information of what this new game will contain or how long it has been in production. Either way, it'll be big shoes to fill considering how Yakuza: Like a Dragoni established Ichiban Kasuga as the new lead after years of Kiryu Kazuma starring as the protagonist.
If yet to play Yakuza: Like a Dragon, it's available on Game Pass, PS4, PC, and Xbox One. And no, you don't need to have played the original games to enjoy it but you should. All the games are on Game Pass now!
