The production team for the Witcher on Netflix has announced that the cast and crew are set to resume filming in the next two months. The second season is likely to take place sometime during the Blood of Elves book, but may have elements from other stories. While this chronologically occurs far before any of the video games, certain plot elements and backstories from the games could be featured in the show.

The Witcher TV series is officially an adaptation of the original books, but critics and audiences have noticed the clear influences from the Witcher games. Music, costumes, and choreography are very reminiscent of the CD Projekt Red games. Star Henry Cavill has admitted to beating the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and using it as inspiration for his version of Geralt.

Author Andrzej Sapkowski had licensed the Witcher to CD Projekt believing the original 2007 game would fail financially. He took only a small upfront fee, and allowed CD Projekt to collect all profits. After the Witcher games were clearly a commercial success, Sapkowski threatened a lawsuit nearing $15.6 million in backed royalties.

The two parties later renegotiated the contract terms in 2019. Although the new agreement was never publicly announced, CD Projekt noted that the deal “satisfies and fully clarifies the needs and expectations of both parties”. This could be a reason why Netflix’s Witcher feels so much like the games. The show has been very favorable for CD Projekt, as sales of the Witcher 3 quintupled year-over-year after the TV series released.
