Xbox One Is a Great Entertainment Box

Not a great video game console

The Xbox One has come a long way since its poor debut. The unveiling of the Xbox One gave Sony the chance to take this generation by storm by providing gamers a system they would want instead of telling them what they should like. It didn't help Microsoft when Nintendo took a 180 with the release of the Nintendo Switch. However, the Xbox One is still a marvelous system but only if you look at it as an entertainment box and not a video game console.

Casual Game Pass

God of War solidified why getting a PS4 was worthwhile. The game soared after its launch with both critics and gamers sending overwhelming positive remarks to the developers at Santa Monica and with titles such as Spider-Man PS4 and The Last of Us Part 2 if Sony hasn't convinced you yet to get a PS4 it will eventually.

This is not to say the Xbox One is without its exclusives. Gears of War 4 and Halo 5: Guardians still have a respected community of followers. But what truly stands out from Sony is Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass.

Granted, Sony has their own version of the subscription-based streaming service called PlayStation Now. However, Microsoft's pass allows for day-1 access to newly launched titles.

One can argue that Microsoft's recent launch library of exclusives hasn't been strong as Sony and providing a similar system would be more destructive than beneficial for Sony when using a title as God of War as an example. What it does provide is casual gamers the chance to try a large assortment of titles without the need to purchase new games, even newly released titles.

Exclusive Services

The Xbox One may not have the same robust library of games as the Nintendo Switch or PS4 but it does include popular services. The other 2 systems do include the Netflix, YouTube, and other popular social applications but Xbox One has better exclusive services.

Backward compatibility with Xbox 360 and Xbox games, cross-platform play and purchasing between Windows 10, and the Xbox Game Pass granting access to hundreds of games, including launch exclusives, provide more options to players. Gamers would argue that these services are nice but unnecessary as the primary use of the console is to play games. But with the Xbox One is more of providing options and ease of access to a game.

Since its launch, the Microsoft has attempted to showcase gamers that the Xbox One is a great video game console but over the course of this generation have done the opposite. These services are great but don't bolster the system's reputation as a great video game console but instead an entertainment box. Given those who own one ample ways to watch and play. Perhaps this E3 we'll get more games instead of services.
