2017 is almost done and looking back gamers had a lot of great games to play this year. Guerrilla Games captivated audiences with Horizon Zero Dawn, Super Mario Odyssey surpassed expectations, and Capcom brought Resident Evil back to its horror roots. Recently Microsoft released their latest version of the Xbox One console, the Xbox One X, and if you plan to get one you're going to need some games to play. While only available in its preview state PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has quickly rocketed to the top of 2017. Selling over 20 million copies before the end of 2017 gamers have sacrificed hundreds of hours fighting one another in open combat. Now it's coming to the Xbox One and judging from the insane popularity it has garnered from the PC community it's without a doubt that this version of the game will succeed thanks to strong multiplayer gameplay.
The long-awaited sequel to Halo Wars released this year. Featuring a cinematic campaign without outstanding animations, approachable gameplay for newcomers to RTS games, and the later addition of cross-platform play allowed gamers between Xbox One and PC to play together. It was plagued with control issues and lack of challenging gameplay but built a solid foundation established by the predecessor.
Don't let its graphics fool you, Cuphead is a devilishly difficult game oozing with charm. The cartoonish art style inspired by classic animation and clever boss battles make for some of the most challenging experiences this generation. Each fight is distinct and requires specific strategies to ensure success, especially if you plan to obtain the A+ rank for each level. Cuphead is a rare gem that couples together retro shoot-em-up gameplay and an original setting to create a phenomenal experience.
