Hector: Badge of Carnage - Episode 3: Beyond Reasonable Doom

Hector: Badge of Carnage does what every adventure series should do: Finish strong.

It’s all come down to the finale. Every step gets Hector that much closer in catching Clappers Wreake’s most dangerous criminal yet. He’ll have to sweep through every porn shop and garbage bins looking for clues, while blowing up toilets and punching farmers in the face along the way. Apparently, he’ll do so naked in a hospital gown. And…a treadmill.

Also, piñatas.

Hector: Badge of Carnage - Episode 3: Beyond Reasonable Doom gives you a quick overview of what went down on the previous two episodes (We Negotiate With Terrorists, Senseless Acts of Justice), as Detective Inspector Hector’s hunt for the Clappers Wreake terrorist gets even more complicated. After discovering the criminal’s secret hideout, Hector and his ever bumbling partner, Lambert, are quickly subdued by said criminal. Both characters find themselves in another precarious situation and must safely escape in order to stop the terrorist’s devious plans once and for all.

There’s nothing really new to Episode 3, and it pretty much follows the same pattern as the previous episodes in terms of story and its penchant for raunchy, off-brand humor. Then again, this is an adventure game, so it’s a bit far-fetched to expect too much. Still, the jokes are funny and this particular episode actually made me laugh the most. The banter between characters is a little better this time around as well, and it’s enjoyable to listen to. On top of that, it’s a well-paced game that nicely balances the transitions between puzzle solving and story. Episode 3 finishes Hector’s adventure that surprisingly gets more intense and exciting as you get one step closer to it.

Hector, Badge of Carnage, Episode 3, Beyond Reasonable Doom, Review

Beyond Reasonable Doom does its best to stave off repetitiveness with new characters and locales, as well as new ways to solve puzzles, which is more or less the meat of Hector: Badge of Carnage’s gameplay. In addition to being able to grab items, you can also combine them to progress through the story. But acquiring those items doesn’t come cheap; you’ll likely have to persuade non-playable characters to give them to you via dialogue trees. The game also does a fairly excellent job in bringing some challenge by hitting you with some misleading dialogue and a wider variety of items to prolong your playthrough. At the same time, however, it just ends up hindering your progress senselessly.

As in the previous episodes, you’ll have to do some outside-of-the-box thinking to understand the ‘logic’ of Hector’s puzzles. But after having been roped into the same style of problems from both Episodes 1 and 2, I’ve since familiarized myself with Hector’s style of mentality. As a result, I was able to breeze through majority of the game’s puzzles while being stumped by just a few. If you still find yourself scratching your head from time to time, the hint system is always there to help you, albeit in a cynical manner, as usual.

Ba-dum tish!

The hint system does a fantastic job giving you suggestions while carefully not revealing the answers right away. As I’ve stated about Episode 1 and 2, I greatly appreciate their decision to make the hint system standoffish, as to encourage you to tackle the challenges yourself instead of you constantly asking for help. Also, Episode 3’s set of brainteasers is near painless to deal with, which in turn makes it a more accessible game overall.

Aside from the gross sexual innuendos and dark comedy, Hector: Episode 3 – Beyond Reasonable Doom is definitely the best episode in the series, with a strong and satisfying conclusion, manageable puzzles, and also earns the honor of being the funniest. Add another one to TellTale’s list of point-and-click adventure games you should check out, and I mean it with every fiber of my being. Now that Hector: Badge of Carnage is all said and done, I wonder what Straandlooper’s next point-and-click entry will be. Is it going to be as gritty as Hector or something entirely different? Whatever it is, count me in.
