When I reviewed Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain back in 2015 I gave it a 90/100, stating it “amazes on all fronts”. That’s true with Metal Gear Solid: The Definitive Experience, it’s the complete Metal Gear Solid V experience in one package and if you haven’t played this masterpiece then go out and get this game!
Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience includes Ground Zeroes, The Phantom Pain, and Metal Gear Online in one package. The game hasn’t received any graphical update or improved frame-rate, instead it’s the same games that were previously released. The Definitive Edition doesn’t include its own Achievement/Trophy set, if you owned Ground Zeroes or The Phantom Pain all achievements/trophies are ported to The Definitive Edition. The Definitive Edition does include all the DLC for Ground Zeroes, The Phantom Pain, and Metal Gear Online including content unreleased outside of Japan such as the Skull Mother Base staff members.
Ground Zeroes serves a prologue that will eventually lead up to the events of The Phantom Pain and sequel to Peace Walker. As Big Boss you’re task with saving Paz and Chico from Camp Omega. After completing the campaign players are given a series of missions to take on within the open-world of Camp Omega as they see fit. It's an excellent opportunity to get use to the gameplay mechanics and controls of Metal Gear Solid V. Your enemies are smart, underestimating them will lead to your own downfall.
The Phantom Pain takes place 9 years after the events of Ground Zeroes. After waking from a coma “Venom Snake” travels to Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan war and the Angola-Zaire border region to seek revenge for the destruction of Miliatires Sans Frontiers. It's here where you'll spend a bulk of your single-player experience.
The main campaign for both games can be completed in around 15 hours, with the side missions easily adding over 40 hours of gameplay. Both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain give you ample options to complete each mission, whether stealthy or leaving a trial of bullet shells and dead bodies. Regardless of which style you choose the game rates your skill base on what tactics were used, not on a single overall grading system. Certain missions constrict this freedom by offering the same missions with different goals, such as avoiding detection or side objectives. This is all detailed on my original Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain review, highlighting why this game succeeds on delivering such an amazing experience full of variety.
For those wondering, The Definitive Edition does not include Mission 51: Kingdom of the Flies shown in the Collector’s Edition bonus disc. Other than the added content DLC content no new missions have been added to The Definitive Edition for either Ground Zeroes or The Phantom Pain.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience is truly an amazing game, it's the entire Metal Gear Solid V experience in one package! The Phantom Pain alone is one of the greatest games ever made, gaining access to Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Online is just more reason to purchase this collection. If you’ve yet to play this Metal Gear Solid V go out and purchase Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Edition, you won’t be disappointed.
