Doom Eternal was about 1 month away until today. id Software and Bethesda confirmed that the highly anticipated title has been pushed back to March 2020.
The official DOOM Twitter account made the announcement.
“Throughout the development of DOOM Eternal, our goal has been to deliver a game that exceeds your greatest expectations across the board,” said id Software in a statement accompanying the delay announcement. “To make sure we’re delivering the best experience — for DOOM Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish — we’ve made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020. We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that DOOM Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait.”
This only includes the PS4, PC, Stadia and Xbox One versions of the game since the Nintendo Switch version does not have an official release date.
That being said, Bethesda is taking a major gamble as March 2020 is where acclaimed titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII: Remake, and The Last of Us: Part II will launch. While the winter and fall seasons are loaded with video game releases, this Spring 2020 is looking rather big. However, following the release of Fallout 76 and Wolfenstein: Youngblood the publisher Bethesda's reputation has reached an all-time low. The company desperately needs a major hit to get out of the hole and perhaps Doom Eternal is that game. After all, the 2016 game was well-received and impressions on the 2020 title have been mostly positive.
