Turns out all those rumors about another version of the Nintendo Switch were true. It's not the more powerful model that were rumored but instead a cheaper version of the popular console. Called the Nintendo Switch Lite, this console will feature a handheld only version of the system. Essentially killing off the Nintendo 3DS.

The Switch Lite features a 5.5-inch screen that displays at a resolution of 720p. In comparison, the original Switch's screen is the 6.2-inch size. Additionally, the Switch Lite will no longer be able to connect to TVs via USB-C and HDMI. This means that the Switch Lite is being positioned as a purely handheld platform.

The Nintendo Switch lite will come with a 32 GB MicroSD card but a more efficient processor. Extending the battery life by 20%-30% along with reduced heat produced by the system. Something I appreciate considering my Switch's fans sounds like a jet engine when playing in handheld mode when playing games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

This new Nintendo Switch model could mean that the 3DS is dead. As most major franchises, like Pokemon, that was once the primary reason to own a Nintendo handheld console have moved to the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo has not been promoting the system as of late and the last big game, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, sold way below expectations. It seems that the Nintendo Switch Lite is most likely the nail in the coffin for the 3DS.

The Nintendo Switch Lite will launch on September 20th and come in gray, yellow, or turquoise for $200.
