Since Telltale Games closure the various games linked to the former publisher have been in a legal gray area. With title such as Tales from the Borderlands, Batman: The Telltale Series, The Wolf Among us and now Minecraft Story Mode set to be taken down from digital stores. With Mojang confirming that Minecraft Story Mode will leave all digital stores by June 25th.

This means even if you purchased the game you won't be able to download the episodes. Mojang is alerting everyone of this and recommending that if you want to keep playing that you need to download the episodes before June 25th.

Today, we have some important information to share for all players of Minecraft: Story Mode - A Telltale Games Series, Season 1 and 2, on behalf of its publisher. As you might have heard, its publisher is no longer in business, which unfortunately means that Minecraft: Story Mode will no longer be supported. If you have purchased these seasons, please download all remaining episodes prior to the service being discontinued in June. Here’s the full message:

“On behalf of the publisher, Minecraft: Story Mode - A Telltale Games Series, Season 1 and 2 will no longer be supported on June 25th, 2019. If you have purchased these seasons, please download all remaining episodes prior to the service being discontinued in June."

So if you own either season of Minecraft: Story Mode on Microsoft Windows, macOS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Android, or iOS, you have until June 25th, 2019 to download the episodes. We’d recommend checking you have all the episodes downloaded!

Perhaps this will be resolved if Microsoft decides to purchase the rights to the series. Take-Two Interactive is currently looking into solutions for a similar issue regarding Tales from the Borderlands since it serves a bridge from Borderlands 2 and the now in development Borderlands 3.

This adds to the growing debate about whether digital sales with take over physical copies. While digital purchases are easier and can be easily downloaded those who purchased physical copies of Telltales' product can still easily play the games without issue. With many wondering how secure their digital games are if the publisher closes, servers are disrupted, or an online connection is not present. With certain platinum trophies and achievements in various Sony and Microsoft titles unattainable because they require a connection to a server that doesn't exist.
