Kingdom Hearts III Long-Development Was Caused by Switching Engines

The switch from Luminous Studio to Unreal 4 extended the development for Kingdom Hearts III

Kingdom Hearts III has had a long development cycle and will finally release later this month. Fans are eager to play this installment in the franchise but many were wondering why it took so long. Speaking with Newsweek co-directors Tetsuya Nomura and Tai Yasue shared why development was so long.

Speaking with Newsweek, Yasue was asked specifically what caused Kingdom Hearts 3‘s lengthy development:

“One of the main factors was the decision to switch the game engine to develop the game. Our current engine is great in terms of developing a high end AAA title, but because there was a change in technology and work flows, it took some time for the team to adapt and adjust.”

It should be noted that in 2014 Square Enix did confirm that the switch for Unreal 4 wouldn't hinder development, but not a lot of people didn't buy that explanation and now it has been confirmed. It was also stated by Nomura, back in 2018, that Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake were announced way too early.

Kingdom Hearts III was not the only Square Enix project to have massive changes during its development cycle, Final Fantasy XV went through extensive changes when it was called Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy VII Remake was moved to in-house development back in 2017.

Kingdom Hearts III is set to release on Xbox One and PS4 this January 25th. Check out our hands-on preview here.
