The Outer Worlds Is Obsidian Entertainment's New Sci-fi RPG

The Outer Worlds launches next year.

Obsidian Entertainment has a new single-players sci-fi RPG in the works and they've co-opted the original creators of Fallout for the project. Revealed during The Game Awards 2018, The Outer Worlds sports a retro-futurist look and is no stranger to quirky humor.

"In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.", its Steam Store page blurb reads.

The trailer itself suggests that choices, whether taken using words or futuristic weaponry, will play a major role in The Outer Worlds. There also seems to be an emphasis on being "flawed, in a good way". The game will, apparently, track what players are awful at, allowing them to wilfully "equip" a flaw which applies a debuff but also grants "an additional character perk immediately". Details regarding this system are scarce at the moment, but it's supposedly optional.

The Outer Worlds is set to launch sometime in 2019 on PC, Xbox One and PS4.
