Doom Eternal Lets You Invade Other Players' Campaigns, Enhances The Doom Slayer's Traversal Capabilities

A good chunk of Doom Eternal gameplay was show at QuakeCon 2018.

QuakeCon 2018 kicked off today with its Keynote which brought forth details on a number of projects. The final part was, however, dedicated to the much anticipated Doom Eternal gameplay reveal. And what a reveal it was. We got a look at concept art showing an updated Doom Slayer armor, monster and weapon designs, after which things moved on to gameplay. The three gameplay videos showcased an Earth overrun by demons and Phobos, including footage from both PC and console versions of Doom Eternal.

Judging by what was shown, Doom Eternal plans to build on the previous Doom's foundation adding a handful of new elements to its excellent demon slaying. Executions are a tad more brutal, the Doom Slayer having a blade attacked to his arm now, while a shoulder-mounted weapon brings extra death upon enemies.

Not only can the Doom Slayer now execute quick dashes, he's learn some new traversal tricks. He can climb certain wall sections, use poles to jump over larger gaps and use his Super Shotgun's Meat Hook to close distance to demons right before blasting their faces to bits. The biggest surprise, however, comes in the shape of Invasions which allow players to enter others' campaigns as demons.  This can be done on one's own or by teaming up together in a Slayer hunting squad and should sound familiar to anyone who's played or watched Dark Souls. Furthermore, id Software's Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin have stated that the studio is planning to expand upon the game's lore and create a Doom universe.

Doom Eternal wasn't given a release date, so chances are it'll still be a bit before we'll get our hands on it.The entire Keynote can be found on Bethesda's Youtube channel and it's very much worth watching. Prior to Doom Eternal titles such as Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls: Legends, Elder Scrolls Online and Rage 2 were discussed.
