Resident Evil 2 has been on everyone's watch list since its official reveal at E3 2018. After Capcom released Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and brought the series back to its survival-horror roots many are hoping for a repeat performance with this remake, except, it's not a remake but a new game built on the original game.
When speaking with Gaming Bolt Capcom Brand Manager Mike Lunn, new content will change much of how player's experience the original game.
“For someone that’s played the game, some people played it once and some people played it a thousand times because it’s their favorite game. For the people that have even played it a thousand times, we wanted it to feel fresh. That’s why we don’t call it Resident Evil 2 Remake. It’s a new game built on top of the foundation.”
This will give those who experienced the first game, like me, a brand new experience such as the lurker who can be seen walking by the window from the original game. Lunn explained that won't be in the 2019 version.
“We don’t include that because of the jumpscares, the puzzles, and because we want you to be challenged by that stuff. We want you to be scared by that stuff, not just repositioned to a new part of the building, but sort of reimagined. Because we don’t want you to know exactly how the puzzles are solved, we don’t want you to know exactly where the enemies are going to be. We want to surprise you. So, we have changed things a bit. But on the whole, the main idea, the main arcs of the story are very similar. But there are going to be some new surprises in there as well.”
As someone who played the original many times over this will come as a relief. Seeing the original from a different lens will provide not only nostalgia but a refreshing experience. This will keep those too familiar with the original's scares something to look forward to and scream at.
Resident Evil 2 is scheduled to release on January 25, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
