The first director of Devil May Cry, Hideki Kamiya, took to Twitter to express a rather interesting opinion about the much rumored next chapter of the series. While these aren't confirmed changes, just him throwing out ideas, Kamiya explained that the series should take on a different direction. Regarding “global trends and the amazing graphics in recent Capcom games,” Kamiya believes a full-fledged change like the one we are seeing with the upcoming reboot/sequel God of War by Santa Monica Studio.
Kamiya mentioned that instead of creating another an “anime-style hack ‘n’ slash” game, Capcom could design Devil May Cry 5 as a realistic and cinematic action game.
This should be taken with a grain of salt since Kamiya hasn't worked on the Devil May Cry series since 2001 and the series is now being directed by Hideaki Itsuno, who appears to be preparing to reveal a new game.
The Devil May Cry franchise did take on a different style back in 2013 with DmC: Devil May Cry developed by Ninja Theory. Set in a different universe the game was heavily criticized for taking the franchise in a new direction but when released received positive acclaim for its action-focused gameplay and story. Ninja Theory has expressed interest in making a sequel when interviewed by Game Informer but must receive a green light from Capcom since they own the IP. DmC: Devil May Cry was eventually re-released as DmC: Definitive Editon that included all previously released DLC, 1080p resolution, and ran at 60 fps for Xbox One and PS4.
Considering the uphill battle DmC: Devil May Cry faced would fans welcome the changes recommended by Kamiya?
