Microtransactions have become one of the most hated words in video games, appearing first in free-to-play games and eventually coming to premium developed titles and changing the industry already. Now it has been confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 will have microtransaction in some capacity. In addition, all future games published by the company will feature microtransactions
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed in a recent investor call translated by Gamasutra:
“We aim to have recurrent consumer spending opportunities for every title that we put out at this company. It may not always be an online model, it probably won’t always be a virtual currency model, but there will be some ability to engage in an ongoing basis with our titles after release across the board.”
Zelnick's desire for microtransactions is shared by a lot of triple-a publishers. With games like Middle-earth: Shadow of War and Mass Effect 3 including premium loot box content. Considering the massive success of GTA V it would make no sense for Take-Two not to include a type of loot box for one of the most anticipated games of this generation.
Currently, we have no clue what type of microtransactions will be included in Red Dead Redemption 2. However, it's likely it'll mimic the GTA V system.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to release in 2018 for Xbox One and PS4.
