After much anticipation and various rumors, Activision has officially launched a countdown clock to reveal Call of Duty: WWII, their next entry to their popular First-Person Shooter games. This will be the first time since 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War release in which the series will be set in a World War II timeline.

It’s now Sledgehammer Games’ turn to be at the helm of the next Call of Duty and it has been nearly three years since their last release of their 2014 Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare game, which we gave an 80/100. Sledgehammer also helped assist Infinity Ward when they formed a co-studio partnership when they made Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

After Activision had their last Q4 2016 earnings call, they cryptically announced that the franchise was indeed going back to its roots:

As you can see, there is no doubt that they’ve been planning this move for quite a while now. Initially, back in 2014, Activision revealed that they were taking their popular FPS to a futuristic setting with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, it was not so well received as its predecessors. This doesn’t really come as a surprise given how much praise and fanfare EA DICE received when they released their WWI-themed FPS, Battlefield 1.

Nevertheless, the series would go on to spawn two more futuristic shooters, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare that would become two of their highest-selling Call of Duty games in franchise history.

Activison will officially unveil Call of Duty: WWII during a worldwide livestream event on April 26, 2017 at 10AM PST / 1PM EST
