Little King's Story Patched By Dark Souls Modder Durante

Steam's version of Little King's Story has been touched by Durante. Praise be.

Publisher Xseed Games has launched a patch for the PC version of Little King’s Story on Steam, fixing most issues with framerate, adding graphical options and improving controls. To fix these launch issues, the company turned to Peter Thoman, who is better known as Durante online. If that name rings a bell: This person modded the PC version of Dark Souls, to get it running at 60 frames per second (fps). Later, the modder did the same for a few other games, such as famously pushing out a 60fps fix for the PC edition of Tales of Symphonia in literal minutes. Durante explained the process of patching Little King’s Story in an Xseed blog post.

The post goes over several parts that needed improvement, in the chronological order they were addressed. First off, the game was stabilized to accommodate 60fps. To do this, individual objects that required rendering changes were switched to use caches, which would prevent change unless necessary. The blog states:

After a bit of tweaking, this lead to a performance of around 123 FPS in the same testing area, an improvement by more than 50%.

Secondly, intermittent stuttering was addressed, which was fixed by painstakingly tracking down each individual cause and adjusting it that way. This process took skips that could take 2 to 3 frames down to about 2 miliseconds.

Unfortunately, a fully effortless, smooth 60fps is not possible in Little King’s Story, due to the game being custom made, for a Wii no less. Even though Durante was given access to the source code, tons of code lines for custom scripts were left, particularly for bosses. These run independently from the rest of the game, which makes syncing them up nearly impossible, without rewriting the whole game. To mitigate this issue, Little King’s Story now has a switch between 30fps and 60fps, by pressing F1.

Durante, showing what a dedicated person they are when it comes to fixing video games, also pushed for a few changes they weren’t asked for. The modder built a new graphics launcher, which also added more shadow options and more anti-aliasing methods. Additionally, they changed Little King’s Story’s 8-way control direction to fully fluid motion, by adding support for analog Xinput controllers.

The post is really a fascinating read, which keeps things understandable, even for those who don’t know a lot about tech issues. To commemorate the large update, Xseed has given Little King’s Story a 40% discount on Steam. Patches for GOG and DRM-free versions are also in the works.
