Just yesterday Ouya announced yet another system update, titled "Jackalope." The update introduces a new rating system and adds the option to postpone system updates. Along with these, many other less exciting, but crucial features were added or tweaked, including a change in the functionality of the O and U buttons for downloaded games.
Along with the details surrounding the "Jackalope" update, the announcement expanded on HDMI-CEC support for Ouya. HDMI-CEC support would allow users to control the Ouya using a remote control, however, this feature would not work with the current generation of Ouyas. "For that, we apologize," said lead producer James, "But now that you’ve made it clear that this is a feature that’s important to you, we’ll make sure that HDMI-CEC support will be a default feature of our next generation of OUYA."
For owners of the current generation of Ouyas, all is not lost. "We are doubling down on supporting IR and Bluetooth remotes and will also be working to develop a mobile/tablet remote app for both Android and iOS," said James. If players are interested in suggesting a remote they'd like to see be supported, visit the OUYAForum.
Probably the most exciting, but least detailed feature covered in this week's blog post was the confirmation that an achievement system is currently in development for Ouya. As of now, there is no planned release date for the achievement system because Ouya is seeking feedback from developers and gamers to incorporate into the design.
An achievement system is a big step for Ouya and may allow for the console to more fairly compete against the other consoles. However, the achievement system doesn't seem to be the company's top priority with James saying, "As always, bug fixing will continue to be a priority for us. We’ve seen OUYA get more solid each month, and we intend to keep that trend going." Here's to the continued progress of Ouya and future improvements.
