We've witnessed the horrific survival during winter in Frostpunk, and while its sequel is coming soon, a new winter survival game has been announced. Not, it's not a real-time strategy, instead, it's a survival adventure. Permafrost, a brand new IP announced by SpaceRocket Games is going to be an interesting new variation on the survival adventure genre and one with an obstructing narrative. It is a game that pushes players into an unpleasant, open-world urban scene where surviving is not just a choice—it is a must.
Permafrost begins when humanity is on the verge of its end as the world sinks into an unending deep freeze following the catastrophic 'shattering,' an end-of-the-world moon phase occurrence. The game depicts a world where billions of people have died due to the icy winter and the breakdown of current political and economic structures. As the protagonist, only you can stop the world from collapsing even further by constructing a haven and bringing the dispersed survivors together in harmony.
Permafrost brings tons of features to the survival adventure genre where you need to survive in a harsh environment and manage resources that are rare to find. You'll also have to build a base, and craft materials, and even preserve life. You'll find yourself a dog as a companion and have to make difficult choices throughout the story. There will be a lot of exploration and discoveries to make in its vast map that includes Cold Zones and even puts you in combat situations.
The harsh environment isn't the only danger in Permafrost; you must also use lethal fighting techniques, such as the usage of archaic weapons or firearms, to fend off hostile adversaries and natural animals. The good news is that Permafrost features a co-op multiplayer that can help you build and gather materials together.
Being able to adjust to new circumstances is essential for survival. You will need to catch rare prey, recycle damaged equipment to construct the tools that are necessary for survival, and face the bone-chilling freezing temperatures that will have an impact on the skills of your character. However, you must exercise caution, as this freezing wasteland is teeming with peril from both man-made and naturally occurring threats.
The survivors will be free to choose their course of action, be it joining forces to restore civilization or surviving in the merciless wilderness. Make elaborate homes out of junk, grow food to keep from becoming hungry, and protect yourself from natural and man-made disasters by using technology. Exploring and discovering new areas is crucial to players' survival as they navigate the frozen remains of civilization, both by car and on foot.
Permafrost is being developed by SpaceRocket Games and published by Toplitz Productions. With an early access release on Steam for PC in 2025, Permafrost will provide up to four players in cooperative and single-player modes.
