The 90s brought a lot of advancements to gaming, the most important being the shift from 2D to 3D. Most people consider the Quake series to be the first 3D shooter, and the game has the right to be important in the timeline of shooters and action games in general. Later on, Quake became such a big hit that people started either modding or planning online matches to have fun and, interesting, people still do play Quake with serious intent.
Some online titles of Quake, such as Live and Champions, are still being played today, both casually and competitively. The original games included a story, just like other shooters from the 90s, but as online games became more important, the franchise totally lost its lore. However, seeing a spark of a potential Quake entry might have made people believe in a new game.
This year’s first Xbox Showcase appeared this month with various developers showcasing their games and explaining the development process. One of the games that had the spotlight was the upcoming adventure title: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The showcase included the story, characters, which type of game it is, and what we could expect from it upon its release. The game is being developed by MachineGames, one of the studios that is tied to Bethesda.
While the showcase was going in and out with gameplay pieces and developmental footage, some people discovered a marking on the whiteboard in the office of MachineGames. Although it is very far off from the screen, the marking blatantly reads “Quake” with the number six beneath it. Quake 6 might be confusing as there was never a Quake 5 before, but talking chronologically, the online-based Quake Champions is the fifth game of the franchise, which makes the dubious six might indicate the next Quake game might be in the works.
Bethesda, as a publisher, is known to bring back old titles with bigger glory as well. The classic shooter Doom has been rebooted twice with both DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. These reimaginations of the first two games paid a good tribute to the originals, and if the Quake is on the line, fans would welcome Bethesda to bring another classic shooter back into the action.
