Everyday technology moves forward, whether in the direction of humanity’s benefit or downfall, well that's subjective. The point of the matter is everyday new innovations are being made in the world of technology and every year, developers get to show these new innovations during events such as the Consumer Electronics Show. Here, ASUS showed off their new compact PC, the ROG NUC, during CES. The NUC, which stands for “Next Unit of Computing”, was initially designed by Intel but they handed the product over to ASUS to develop furthered systems.
Despite how innovative the ROG NUC sounds, it is nothing new and has been around since 2013 and is a compact, self-contained gaming PC that can easily be moved around and stored behind screens or monitors. The product has seen many changes in its nearly 11-year life cycle and the more recent versions have evolved into something that can be changed and upgraded over time to work with modern AAA games. This seems to be a trend that ASUS intends to follow, especially with their most recent addition to the range.
The specs for the ROG NUC were first reported by Engadget and show that the compact PC will have two configurations. The first version of the NUC will include Intel Core Ultra 7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, while the more powerful model packs a Core Ultra 9 processor and an RTX 4070 GPU. No matter what version you purchase, both versions will include a 2.5liter chassis weighing 800 grams. These chassis will feature a toolless design meant for easy access for both customization purposes and necessary maintenance and repair.
The compact PC will also include a DDR5 memory support with a maximum capacity of 64GB, three PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slots, and a whole swath of I/O ports, including a single Thunderbolt 4 port that supports DisplayPort 2.1. Asus says the ROG NUC can support up to four 4K displays meaning the ROG NUC will also work for gamers who prefer to have a multi-monitor setup. The design is incredibly sleek and is designed to both be arranged in an either horizontal or vertical position.
Despite its small size, the ROG NUC is a powerful PC that definitely has potential to become a welcome console replacement for some PC users who would prefer something a little more compact. Sadly, we have yet to get a price or availability on the compact PC, but if the other PCs in range are anything to go by, you might be expecting to pay quite the pretty penny.
