It's hard to believe that it has been five years since Bethesda released Fallout 76, the controversial online multiplayer game that divided the Fallout fanbase. However, whether you love it or hate it, or you just want to try the game out, Fallout 76 will soon be free-to-play on both PC and consoles but there's a catch. As for why the game is going to be free to play, it is meant to commemorate the game's five-year anniversary since its release back in 2018.
Fallout 76's release was quite the hot topic back in November 2018, while many fans were excited to play a new Fallout game, what they got was far from what they had hoped for. The game had numerous issues, from both graphical and technical issues such as animations not playing or more infamously, the game not allowing players to fast travel. Technical issues are a standard for any Bethesda release, so the bugs weren't the biggest issue that players had with the game, the biggest issue was that Fallout 76 was launched as a live-service title. Despite its rather horrible release, Fallout 76 has endured the test of time and has garnered quite the devoted player base, after multiple patches and updates of course.
Now that the game is in an arguably better state, many players who were reluctant to try out the game now have a chance to give it a whirl. To commemorate the game's five years anniversary, the game will now be free-to-play just in time for the start of the Spooky Scorched event. This Halloween themed event will allow players to hunt down event specific mobs that will drop Spooky Treat Bags and Mystery Candy, and of course, legendary weapons and armor. Players will also be able to receive a free Spooky Candy Bowl from the Atomic Shop. This item will allow other players to enjoy some of the Spooky Scorched items when visiting each other's camps.
Now, if you're interested in participating, it should be noted that Fallout 76 will only be free-to-play for a limited time but players should enjoy as much of the event as they can. If you are a new or returning player, Bethesda is planning on hosting not one, but two Wasteland Classroom streams on 25 October 2023 and 1 November 2023 to help players brush up on their knowledge about the game's lore.
