State of Decay is one of those horror games that has cultivated quite the cult following since its inception, but it would seem like those same devoted fans are in for some bad news, as a recent rumor turns out to be true. The rumor in question, regards the release of the zombie horror title and that it is likely that fans of the games will have to wait until 2027 for the third entry. This is most likely due to the sheer size of the project.
For those of you who are unaware of State of Decay 3, the title was originally announced back in 2020, during the Xbox Games Showcase. The games were developed by Undead Labs, which is owned by Microsoft, and we got our first glimpse of State of Decay 3 via a short cinematic trailer. While the cinematic was impressive to look at, it gave us little to no actual information about the game, not even a release date.
Since we were not given a release date, fans have been patiently waiting for any new information surrounding the game and now, thanks to a recent rumor that has surfaced online, the wait is finally over but the news isn't good. According to the rumor, State of Decay 3 is aiming for a release date around 2027, this information comes from an Artist on Artstation, Nora Shramek, who is currently working at Undead Labs.
As of writing the post, where this information comes from is currently unavailable, meaning the artist most likely deleted it, this could be due to the amount of media coverage surrounding the story. However, it is too soon to tell the reason behind the post's deletion, as it could have been an incorrect date, or it was not meant to be shared. If this rumor does turn out to be true, that would mean fans will need to wait another 4 years until the game is released, meaning that State of Decay 3 will release 9 years after its predecessor.
It's incredibly hard to tell the validity of the rumor, both due to Undead Labs' silence on the matter and how closely wrapped State of Decay 3's development is. In any case, it is very likely that we will have to wait some time before the game is released anyway, it is also likely that State of Decay 3 isn't the only game that will be a first-party Xbox Game Pass exclusive, as the company has several games in the pipeline including Forza Motorsport, Fable, Avowed, Clockwork Revolution, and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
