Sony Interactive Entertainment, which mainly deals with the PlayStation brand, has announced that the sales figures on their latest generation of console have reached 40 million units sold. The announcement was made with a blog post, shared by Sony and thanked their fans for their support.

Sales figures actually showcase how Sony was able to bring their production line to a better and more stable position than the first time ever releasing the console to the public. As we all know, Sony had a shortage of distributing PlayStation 5 units worldwide due to chips and manufacturers not being available during the pandemic.

The pandemic had a big impact on Sony and its new console as they were released in November 2020. Now that the problems have gone away, Sony can operate normally as they would have when PlayStation 4 was released back in 2013. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO Jim Ryan forwarded important bits on why PS5 took some time to render itself as a high-selling console: “We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019. Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time.” Jim Ryan also forwarded the fact that “the PS5 is now well-stock”, meaning that people can order it without hesitation or having to pay extra amount for scalpers.

Although this is great news for Sony, their previous generation console, PS4, still has high numbers sold in total. From 2013 to 2023, PS4 sold 117 million units worldwide and that is a huge number that PS5 has to catch until the next generation follows up the order. Even though PS5 has a lot of ways to cover, sales between January and March 2023 show 6.3 million units, making it possible that PS5 can compete against both the previous gen and competitors Nintendo and Microsoft.

Nintendo still hasn’t come up with their latest-gen consoles and still selling Switches without no issues. Their different iterations and version changes are quite adequate enough for the consumer base and they have sold 125 million units since its debut in 2015. On the other hand, Microsoft is struggling to show the importance of the Xbox Series X|S which has sold 21 million units in total.
