GSC Game World, the company that brought the world the S.T.A.L.K.E.R Series, has been having a particularly tough time with the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The company is, firstly, a Ukrainian company so it has been caught in the middle of a warzone, but in more recent news, the company has suffered hacks that may leak parts of the game.

This led GSC Game World to release a statement on Twitter about the issue. The statement explains that there was a hack from a person or group that claimed to be from a Russian social media service that has gone unnamed in the statement. The statement goes on to explain that an employee’s work-with-images application was hacked.

This hack led to blackmail and intimidation that GSC Game World is refusing to respond to, or at least this is how it appears, as the company has requested that if any leaks do surface, that players not have a look. The reasoning is likely similar to the difficulties that Rockstar Games had last year when Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay was leaked, and players immediately judged it without understanding how the development of games actually works, and that alpha gameplay never looks good.

GSC Game World goes on to explain that it has been receiving blackmail threats, aggression, and attempts to harm fans and the company for a year now. All of this is likely connected to the ongoing war in the country. The statement even includes a more brazen statement that the company has faced far scarier things than some blackmail in the last year, like the destruction of homes and the deaths of friends and family.

Hopefully, there are no S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl leaks because of this, and GSC Game World and its employees will be able to continue developing their game without continued cyberattacks. However, we will have to wait and see if that is the case. In addition, we hope that all the developers at the company and all the citizens in the country can remain as safe as possible while hostilities continue.
