There appears to be a security vulnerability in the PC version of GTA Online, the online component of Grand Theft Auto V, and this vulnerability can allow remote access to your account. Hackers can remove a player’s rank and money, delete their progress, corrupt their account, or even ban them from the game.
This security vulnerability was revealed with evidence via the Rockstar-oriented Twitter account Tez2, which reveals that this new extreme exploit, as they describe it, can allow the addition, removal, and modification of stats, and that a player should use a firewall while playing or simply not play at all until this issue has been dealt with by Rockstar Games.
According to an article on PC Gamer, various users demonstrated being immediately kicked from servers or having their accounts corrupted after turning off the firewall. The most common firewall is the custom-made Guardian firewall, which can help keep this exploit at bay. However, the developer of Guardian has taken the mod down at present, because they are concerned that new users will misuse it and lose their accounts and/or progress. Even they recommend not playing the game for now.
According to Tez2, there is a temporary fix once your account has already been corrupted, which entails deleting the Rockstar Games folder from your Documents and then reloading the game to refresh the profile data. It is preferable to just stop playing until this has been sorted out though as a long-time GTA Online player probably doesn’t want to lose all their progress because of some security vulnerability.
Hopefully Rockstar Games fixes this soon. And, thankfully, in a somewhat unusual state of affairs, Rockstar has directly announced, via Twitter, that it is aware of the issue and is actively working on it. The company also states that if you have been affected, you should contact the support team.
