The PlayStation brand has been making incredible strides in accessibility for several years, and the console powerhouse is set to continue in that direction with its latest piece of hardware. Project Leonardo is a special, highly customizable accessibility controller kit that allows for players who need a very different controller layout to get just that.

The new controller kit was announced at CES and elaborated on in a post on the PlayStation blog. The post details various features for the device. It is fully customizable with swappable components, a variety of analog caps, and buttons of varying shapes and sizes. Furthermore, the button configuration can be programmed in any way a player requires, and a single button can even be mapped to two functions for ease of use.

This new accessibility controller kit has a bit of a strange design, but that design allows for it to be moved and configured in ways that can suit any play style. This controller kit was also designed through consultation with a variety of accessibility experts and organizations, such as AbleGamers, SpecialEffect, and Stack Up. This means that it was designed and developed with the help of accessibility advocates, so it should be a great product for those who need it.

The list of accessibility features goes on, with additional support aspects like linking with existing controllers and having third-party usability. This accessibility controller kit is meant to help any gamer who needs some additional help while playing, and the fact that it can be used elsewhere should indicate that it can be used away from the PlayStation console alone, meaning PC gamers who require accessibility support should be able to use this device.

Accessibility has become a bigger issue in recent years in the games industry, and it is set to continue being an important area. PlayStation has long been especially focused on accessibility, with games like The Last of Us Part II and God of War Ragnarök being absolute accessibility beasts. Let’s hope these kinds of accessibility improvements continue so even more people can play and enjoy games.
