Wizards Of The West Coast Cancels Multiple Projects

Wizards of the West Coast, the famed Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering publisher, has cancelled multiple projects.

Wizards of the West Coast, the company most famous for producing Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, has cancelled at least five unannounced games that entered development during its attempts at an ambitious expansion in 2022. We have not been informed which games were affected by this decision, but various studios were opened to make way for these expansion plans, including Skeleton Key and Invoke Games.

This news was reported by Bloomberg, and Wizards of the West Coast stated that it is still “committed to using digital games” but that it is going to make changes going forward so that it focuses on games in existing brands that can lead to better expansion and audience engagement. The company has also stated that fewer than fifteen people will be laid off as a result of these changes in the company’s new business direction.

However, the report explains that this will hit independent companies the hardest. Companies like OtherSide Entertainment and Hidden Path Entertainment, which were contracted to produce games for Wizards of the West Coast, will be affected more than the Dungeons and Dragons developer and publisher.

Additionally, Wizards of the West Coast cancelled an internal project that was codenamed “Jabberwocky,” and two external projects that were still early in development. So, the large plans that the company had appear to have led to some financial difficulties as Hasbro, the company that owns Wizards of the West, has seen its shares fall by 40% in the last year as its higher prices led to reduced toy sales.

For those who were excited for what Wizards of the West Coast had in store for video game players, you’ll sadly have to keep waiting. Hopefully, the projects still in development manage to make it to release without any further issues getting in the way.
