An early surprise announcement at The Game Awards 2022 was the reveal of Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, a new roguelike based on the cult graphic novel series by Mike Mignola.
Hellboy is a cool character with a really interesting world that has been pretty underserved in video games. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is an action-adventure roguelike from Upstream Arcade, whose previous title West of Dead is a twin-stick shooter with a similar art style to the classic Hellboy graphic novels. The comic's original creator Mike Mignola is involved, with Web of Wyrd telling an original story set in the mysterious Butterfly House, a mansion that opens a doorway to the Wyrd dimension. It's 1982 and Hellboy has been sent to the Butterfly House to locate a missing colleague, from there the big-fisted half-demon sets out on a series of adventures featuring monstrous toe-to-toe brawling.
While giving this legendary cult IP to a small studio with only two games under their belt is a risk, English indie studio Upstream Arcade and Dutch publisher Good Shepherd Games appear to have nailed Hellboy's unique art style of dark colors, thin line art, and gothic fantasy. The roguelike genre will allow Upstream Arcade to embrace the weirder side of the Hellboy franchise and, after three live-action feature films and only two animated features (and an animated TV series announced in 2021), it is past time that Hellboy expanded into other media.
During Hellboy's investigation, "you will explore wondrous and strange planes of existence contained within The Wyrd, each one home to powerful monsters, forgotten godforms, magnificent treasures, and powerful secrets. But be warned, because ancient evil stagnates within the furthest reaches of The Wyrd… evil that is eager to be let out." The reveal trailer shows Hellboy squaring up against a werewolf as an ominous voice (potentially from the werewolf) talks about the origins of nightmares, it also hints at Hellboy: Web of Wyrd's melee combat and potential destructible environments with Hellboy punching his foe through a crumbling stone wall.
No release date for Hellboy: Web of Wyrd yet, but the game is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch.
