Riot Games, the company primarily known for League of Legends, and Ubisoft, the company known for Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy games, have announced a partnership that will see both companies jointly developing AI systems that will allow them to combat online toxicity. They have specifically stated that, as they are both members of the Fair Play Alliance, they believe that they will only improve these matters through “communication, collaboration, and joint efforts.”

This new initiative was announced on Riot Games’ blog, and it will be called the “Zero Harm in Comms” research project. According to the announcement report, the two companies have decided to team up with each other to “develop a database gathering in-game data to better train AI-based preemptive moderation tools that detect and mitigate disruptive behavior in-game. Any data gathered that will be able to identify a person will be removed before sharing.”

This is essentially similar to the proactive moderation tools that Microsoft discussed only a day before this news broke when it released its Xbox Transparency Report. So, as this kind of moderation news is somewhat shared between Riot Games, Ubisoft, and Microsoft, it should be safe to assume that each of these major gaming companies, and likely many more, are interested in dealing with the issue of online toxicity and preventing it before it can happen. Or, at the very least, they want to appear as if they are interested in this.

Online toxicity is a major issue for online players, and as these companies want to ensure that their online spaces can be as inclusive as possible, there will likely be continued efforts towards achieving that goal. The Zero Harms in Comms initiative should be a good attempt at achieving just that, and the collaborative nature of it is great for the industry as a collective.
