Dragon Ball: The Breakers is a new direction for the Dragon Ball franchise. In the past, video game adaptations of the hugely popular manga and anime series have tended to focus on either one-on-one fighting games, or RPGs retelling various Sagas. Dragon Ball: The Breakers however is an asymmetric one-vs-seven multiplayer game in which a group of Survivors must escape a rampaging Raider.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers is published by Bandai Namco and developed by Dimps, who have made several Dragon Ball games in the past. Bandai Namco Digital Marketing Manager Megan Lam sat down with Bandai Namco producer Ryosuke Hara and Dimps developer Yoshiga Otsuka to discuss their new game on the PlayStation Blog.
Hara and Otsuka regularly refer to "the overwhelming power difference that can only [be] achieve[d] in Dragon Ball" and Dragon Ball: The Breakers strives to portray this by pitting unpowered Survivors from the Dragon Ball series against the franchise's trademark insanely superpowered beings. The three Raiders at launch are Cell, whose "fast growth speed and stable search skills" make him a strong all-round hunter; technical type Frieza who can deploy villains Zarbon and Dodoria; and Buu, a "'high-risk, high-return type' that evolves slowly but hunts down Survivors... [during] the latter half of the game." What makes Dragon Ball: The Breakers stand out from other asymmetrical hunt/escape games like Dead By Daylight and Friday the 13th is how the Raiders evolve over the course of the match. For example, Cell starts the match as a larva and evolves as the game progresses into his powerful final form.
The idea for the game originated with Hara's belief that "the threat of battles between super warriors could be more strongly felt by viewing them not from the perspective of strong characters, but from the perspective of ordinary people." The Survivors, including familiar faces Bulma and Oolong, have been trapped in a Temporal Seam, imprisoned with "a menacing enemy from another timeline... [that] becomes stronger minutes-by-minutes". Dragon Ball: The Breakers is joining a very packed subgenre and Bandai Namco will be relaying on the strength of the Dragon Ball brand and The Breaker's unique evolution mechanic to be successful.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers releases on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and XBOX One on October 14th.
