According to a tweet by 2K Studios, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the first installment of the Mafia franchise, the classic Mafia game will be free on Steam from September 1st to September 5th. This is an offer no one can refuse, and you might want to mark your calendars for this release.
If you are not familiar with the franchise, think of it as the lovechild of GTA and The Godfather. Because Mafia has been called both of these things following its release. In fact, upon its release, Mafia has been called a lot of things. But one thing is certain: It is one of the most influential and legendary releases in the video game sector. Upon its release, it was praised mostly for its realism- Although it may seem unimpressive for 2022, it was a big deal in 2002.
This original version of the game which was released in 2002 was developed by Illusion Softworks, now called 2K Czech. But the history of Mafia goes further than that, as the first Mafia game was initially developed around 1999, but its release had to be delayed because of a change in the engine in which the game was developed. As I said, it might not look like a big deal now, but it was a huge step in the video games industry when it was released.
Mafia was received in an incredibly positive light, with a lot of big video game news outlets giving the game a score of 90 or above. The game has two sequels, and all the games in the trilogy also have remastered definitive editions released in 2020. With a new game in the Mafia franchise being in development, it might be a good idea to not pass by this offer. Furthermore, there are a lot of people who dislike the new definitive release of this game but love the original- Who knows, maybe you might be one of those people!
