Fresh from the success of the cyberpunk cat game Stray, Annapurna Interactive's second annual showcase debuted a diverse set of stylish and unique titles.
Space exploration game Outer Wilds, and family history lesson What Remains of Edith Finch will receive free 60fps upgrades for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, with Outer Wilds' releasing on September 15th. Meanwhile, Cardboard Computer, the Chicago-based developers behind Kentucky Route Zero, are making a new game. As is Austin and Atlanta-based two-person development team Yarn Owl.
The Pathless (by Giant Squid) and Marquette (by Graceful Decay) will be released on Xbox consoles, the Nintendo Switch in Winter 2022, and the science fiction title Solar Ash (by Heart Machine) arrives on Steam on December 6th. Irish studio Dreamfeel is working on an Ireland-inspired fantasy title starring a cast of cat characters, Hollow Ponds are releasing multiplayer title Flock for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, GamePass, Steam, and PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5; Forever Ago is a "story-driven road trip adventure game" by Third Shift where you play as an old man documenting his life in his van, and Santa Monica Studio's Hohokum is being re-released on PC.
DINOGOD's upcoming Mech game Bounty Star: The Morose Tale of Graveyard Clem looks like a fun mix of the science fiction and western genres and releases on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, GamePass, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Steam in 2023; Uvula is the new game by Katamari Dynasty creator Keita Tahaski; The Lost Wild is a tense dinosaur horror game by Great Ape Games that might be worth keeping an eye on, and the minimalistic Hindsight looks like it will bring everyone to tears when it releases on August 4th on the Nintendo Switch, Steam, and the Apple Store.
The star of Annapurna Interactive's showcase was Outloop Games' Thirsty Suitors. Narrated by Game Director Chandana Ekanayake and Narrative Lead Meghna Jaynath, the Seattle-based studio gave players a solid look at what was in store for them.
Thirsty Suitors is an action-adventure RPG following Jala as she returns to her hometown of Timber Hills after a nasty breakup; it is "a game about culture, relationships, family pressures, and expressing oneself." Jala will cross paths with her ex-partners and must deal with the trail of broken hearts she has left in her wake. The turn-based combat is reminiscent of the Persona series, except the end goal is reconciliation rather than extermination.
Narrative choices throughout the game and mid-fight dialogue options will shape "Jala's personality and backstory", Each of Jala's ex-partners has an Inner World, a psychic landscape modeled after how they see themselves and where the ego reigns. As well as "fantastical turn-based combat with her thirsty ex-suitors", skateboarding also plays an important role in Jala's life. Both as a way of getting around Timber Hills and through the skateboarding cult she finds herself crossing paths with. A cult, it is worth noting, that is run by the mascot of a large abandoned theme park known only as Soundie the bear. Thirsty Suitors will be available in all of its colorful, weird, and thirsty glory on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, GamePass, Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Switch; and there is a demo available to get now on Steam.
