Ubisoft have delayed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and cancelled four other games

Ubisoft has apparently ended development on four upcoming titles and delayed two others. According to the news site Video Game ChronicleGhost Recon: Frontline, Splinter Cell VR, and two unannounced titles have been canceled "due to the changing financial environment" over at Ubisoft.

Ghost Recon: Frontlines was in development at Ubisoft Bucharest and was going to be a free-to-play battle royale that emphasized tactical squad-based FPS gameplay. Meanwhile, many hoped that Splinter Cell VR would be the triumphant return of espionage agent Sam Fisher who, after almost a decade left out in the cold, deserves a return to consoles. Announced alongside an Assassin's Creed VR title in September 2020, Splinter Cell VR was in development at Ubisoft-owned developers Red Storm Entertainment (Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Werewolves Within), with assistance from Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Reflections (located in the United Kingdom). Interestingly, Splinter Cell VR is the second game related to Ubisoft Mumbai to experience development issues in 2022, with the much-delayed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake being taken off of their hands back in May.

Finally, in their Q1 financial report, Ubisoft announced that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and an unannounced premium title will be delayed till at least early 2023. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, is based on the film franchise created by James Cameron, and it was hoped that the game would release to coincide with the long-awaited sequel film Avatar: The Way of Water. The delay to Frontiers of Pandora has come from Ubisoft's desire to deliver a "cutting-edge-immersive experience that takes full advantage of next-gen technology", as well as work restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The game will continue to be developed by Ubisoft-owned Swedish developers Massive Entertainment (The Division 2) in association with Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney.
